The UATARTANPROJECT was an opportunity for students, enrolled in the College of Human Environmental Sciences' Department of Clothing, Textiles, & Interior Design, to use their skills + talent to create an original tartan design for The University Alabama.
A panel, representing students, staff, faculty + alumni, selected three tartan designs from the submissions. Each of the selected student designers were featured in a video showcasing their tartan. The winning tartan design was determined by a panel of judges and results of the online voting poll.

Description
This tartan represents The University of Alabama not only because of the colors used, but also because of what each color and line stands for. From the buildings to our mascot, a variety of themes are represented. Inspiration Walking around campus and noticing things that I normally don't look at opened my eyes to some of my inspiration. A lot of it came from learning history about the school that I had never known before. Colors I chose crimson, grey and white because of the school's colors and I chose red and the dark red color for what they represent. Arrangement The skinny red line represents the football team because when they started in 1892 they were called the "Thin Red Line." The darker red line in between the skinny red line represents the bricks that are part of Denny Chimes and most of the buildings on campus. Inside of that, the white and crimson represents the Crimson White and all of the history it has reported for 116 years. In the middle, the two grey lines represent our mascot, the elephant. |

Description
This tartan represents the culture, tradition, pride, and most importantly, Unity, as it reflects upon The University of Alabama Family. Inspiration This design is greatly inspired by the home of the Crimson Tide Family...Our campus! Particularly the Quad, because it is the heart of UA's campus in more ways than one. I also wanted to design a tartan that would stand out from the norm, yet still represent UA as one, whole, united family. Colors Crimson was chosen to depict the heart, spirit, and tradition of our UA family. It represents the "crimson" blood that runs through our veins now, as well as the blood that was shed many years ago, on our campus during the Civil War. Green represents the Quad, which is not only filled with, but also built upon UA culture and tradition. Buried beneath our Quad are the remains and ruins of several dorm buildings that were burned during the Civil War. The Mound on the northwest side of the Quad is the site of the old Franklin Hall dorm. The Original library is buried underneath the area in front of Gorgas Library on the quad. Arrangement The green lines are arranged directly in the middle, to symbolize the Quad's central location on the UA campus. There are Crimson lines underneath as well as on top of the green lines. The ones that are underneath represent those that have walked, fought, and died on the Quad, while those on top represent the many individuals that walk across the Quad today. Whether above, or below, all the Crimson lines intersect. The intersections symbolize the crossing of our paths and the impact that we have had, have, or will have on each other's lives. It means that we are one, united family, connecting the past to the present, and the present to the future. Everyone may not have visited Bryant Hall, or even Denny Stadium, but we all, whether student, faculty, staff, or maybe just a diehard fan, have at some point in our connection to the Crimson Tide, walked across/ experienced the Quad....The uniting place for our Family. |
we are crimson
designer : linnzi rich
Description
When I think of the color crimson, I think of The University of Alabama and the tradition and pride that are cornerstones of this university. My tartan design incorporates these qualities using the rich and traditional colors of crimson and white with accents of black and gray. Whether you are a student, alumnus, faculty member, or an ultimate Tide fan, these colors are recognizable as the colors associated with The University of Alabama. Anyone that has ever attended school here, taught a class, been to a game, or supported the Tide from across the state, knows the strong feeling of "crimson pride" - We are Crimson. It is with this same great pride that I introduce to you my tartan, "We Are Crimson." Inspiration I was inspired to find a design that could relate to the university as a whole. Therefore, I used one line for each college within The University of Alabama. Colors I kept the color scheme that is true to The University of Alabama. Arrangement There are thirteen lines on the initial pattern, one line for each school within the university. Starting out with a base color of solid crimson, the lines are laid out as follows: gray (with a left side outline), white, gray (with a right side outline), red (with an outline), white (outlined), red, white, red, white (outlined), red (with an outline), gray (with a left side outline), white, and gray (with a right side outline). |
