In spring 2000, four teams of students (5 per team) were tasked with developing a visual concept for Matsuri. Each team presented their concept to a panel of judges comprised of individuals from the local business community. The winning concept is below:
The winning concept was transformed from a two-dimensional idea into a real, three-dimensional object by the united team of 20 students.
The resulting market stands were constructed from local bamboo, harvested by the students, who also constructed the banners, made from muslin, which they screen-printed with the word sakura in English and Japanese.
